Janusz Korczak: The Man Who Knew How to Love Children

Imagine a wonderful, loving orphanage where children responsibly govern themselves!

This is the story of young Itzchak Belfer, the author and an artist, at a joyful orphanage, run by Janusz Korczak, where children had daily chores, yet also great freedom to make decisions and adjust rules. Belfer allows us a rare glimpse into Korczak’s innovative methods, describing his daily life, the house arrangements, and how conflicts were resolved. He believed in giving children freedom, allowing them to manage themselves and develop their unique talents.

Although he was murdered by the Nazis, the ideas and methods of Janusz Korczak live on

When the Nazis occupied Warsaw, Belfer escaped through the woods to Russia, and was the only survivor in his family. Korczak, the legendary Polish pediatrician, author, and educator, was murdered by the Nazis when he refused to save himself and abandon his Jewish children. Teachers all over the world have adopted his innovative ideas and practice.

Beautifully illustrated by the author and suitable for children

The book is decorated with Itzchak Belfer’s special drawings and is written for children age six and up.
